Sentient Light - A solo exhibition by DASE - (Click here to enter Martin's Website)

Light is the element without which life and art would be unthinkable.

Sentient Light is a privy to the world of an artist's psyche, an emotional journey, an odyssey from self-realization to self-transcendence. Shedding light on how closely light and life are intertwined with one another, it creates a vision of hope in the light of opening up new horizons of visual representation in a digital age through digital means.

All artworks on exhibit are created by DASE artists Martin See Tho Kok Wah from The Society for the Physically Disabled.

Nature of Disability: Machado Joseph Disease

About Martin

Martin was inflicted with a rare genetic disease of the cerebellum known as the Machado-Joseph Disease in 1996, causing him to lose his sense of balance, speech and muscular coordination gradually. Martin’s condition has led him to express himself through Digital Art - to understand his art pieces would be akin to understanding the totality of his thoughts. Dynamic and perpetually filled with bold ideas and potent inspiration, Martin’s works may very well delimit the mind and free the imagination. Above all, Martin hopes that his works would bring joy to those who look at them.

An excerpt of Martin’s sharing on his struggle and journey to becoming a DASE Artist:

The turning point came when I decided to face up with life courageously, to break away from my cocoon of self-pity by seeking help from The Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) in year 2005. Although I did not know what to expect from SPD when I first joined them, I was amazed and fascinated when they taught me to do art using a computer. I learnt the software, the tools and the skills and unknowingly, I discovered that my life was brightening up with pastels of colors and slowly, I was being acknowledged as a “DASE Artist”.

Foreword

Light is the first of the painters. There is no object so foul, that intense light will not make it beautiful. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

There is not enough darkness in all the world to put out the light of even one small candle.~ Robert Alden.

With these two meaningful quotes I begin my foreword to this unique first solo exhibition entitled Sentient Light, by talented Digital Artist Martin See Tho.

Sentient Light is a personal journey taken by an artist who chanced upon art at the byroads, eventually becoming a signpost of strength and conviction that renewed the artist’s purpose of existence amidst the changing tides of life.

Sentient describes the human condition that is predominantly dictated by its fallibility and the inevitable suffering that comes with our senses; which is alleviated, turned around and even celebrated – via the expression of art by great artists through the ages.

Light, which is the universal symbol of hope and goodness, is consequently the requisite for the birth of sight and of art; movers of the human soul. This double entendre summarizes the theme of this exhibition.

Ending with a quote from the great poet Tagore, DASE invites you to partake in this personal and revelatory journey that would perhaps, move you to appreciate and treasure the joy of existence.

Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
